Meet our new Director of Social Services

Larry Dancy was named the new Director of Social Services for the Birmingham Salvation Army Area Command. He will be responsible for all programs and duties related to the everyday care we offer to those in need. Whether it is community, residential or emergency care, it is a vital position and requires a lot of dedication. Larry has had a lot of success working with those dealing with hardships in their life. His career experience includes leadership and supervisory roles in the mental health and social services fields. He has worked with kids and families in crisis, foster children & parents, as well as those with mental disabilities. Originally from Aliceville and an avid sports fan, Larry knew early on in life he wanted to make a difference. As a teen, he worked with the elderly and humbly offered his help to impact those in need. “When I was young, it just seemed natural to help,” he told us. He has given years of that humble service to places like Glenwood Health Center & J.S. Tutwiler. Larry says he was impressed with how much respect our clients receive while in our care. “It’s no ordinary shelter,” he told us. “It’s a God driven place with so much given back to the community.” He joins a staff that is dedicated to offering hope to those that may otherwise remain invisible in society. ”I just want to enhance our relationship with the community the best I can,” Larry told us. ”I have some pretty big shoes to fill.” Those shoes belong to John Stamps, who was the director for 10 years and is now Director of Operations for the Birmingham Area Command. John’s passion for his job has meant the utmost respect from other organizations from around our community. In his new role, he will be able to continue that service. As for Larry, we welcome him and his extensive experience to our family!
